The History of the Beirut Marathon

In October 19, 2003, Lebanon hosted its first international marathon, marking a historic moment in the country’s history.

All of it started with May El Khalil’s goal to introduce running culture to Lebanon.

May El Khalil started to realize her ambition when she managed the founding of the Beirut Marathon from her hospital bed after escaping a near-fatal running injury.

With the help of her family and friends, May was able to establish one of the most successful running events in Lebanon, with the main objective of fostering a healthy lifestyle and uniting people via running and she achieved this by focusing on her goals with determination and persistence.

The Beirut Marathon has expanded and flourished since the first-ever race was held in 2003, adding yearly races and activities that supported the development of the running culture in Lebanon.
