The Beirut Marathon is a running marathon where professional athletes and regular runners gather to race the lively streets of the city; the Marathon first started in 2003 with the goal of promoting sports, peace, and harmony. A full marathon, a half marathon, and a 10K race are among the events in which participants can choose to compete.
In addition to encouraging physical health and bringing attention to social challenges in the area, the Beirut Marathon has grown to be a major international athletic event.

The History of the Beirut Marathon
In October 19, 2003, Lebanon hosted its first international marathon, marking a historic moment in the country’s history.
All of it started with May El Khalil’s goal to introduce running culture to Lebanon.
May El Khalil started to realize her ambition when she managed the founding of the Beirut Marathon from her hospital bed after escaping a near-fatal running injury.
With the help of her family and friends, May was able to establish one of the most successful running events in Lebanon, with the main objective of fostering a healthy lifestyle and uniting people via running and she achieved this by focusing on her goals with determination and persistence.
The Beirut Marathon has expanded and flourished since the first-ever race was held in 2003, adding yearly races and activities that supported the development of the running culture in Lebanon.
Are there any Beirut Marathon races in the near future?
There are two upcoming Beirut Marathon events that are scheduled to take place:
- 7.7.2024 – Run the City, 10KM Race
- 09-10 November 2024 – OMT Beirut Marathon, Full Marathon 42KM, Half Marathon 21KM, 10KM, 5KM
