“Kenenisa Bekele, a professional runner, speaks in the video.

In the beginning, it was not very clear for me. I played football, I played volleyball, and randomly one day during football, my teacher told me that if I try athletics, maybe I’m very strong and become like other runners. Just I feel maybe he was joking to me and it’s impossible maybe to become a professional athlete.

My family did not allow me to do some extra, you know, like training for athletics. They wanted me to study and bring good results within my study. Sometimes I’m hiding them to go to training, maybe two races I have been competing, hiding them. They don’t know, you know, when during a competition, they hear on the radio somebody here on the radio and they told them, “Oh, your son has become a good runner,” and he was achieved, you know, good results. There was they were very happy. They are, you know, they are happy.

At that time, I told them, “You know, I’m not any more depend on you after this, so don’t force me to work other jobs, you know, for you farming or something apart from my study. So leave me now. I’m a free person. I found some helper.” So after they are happy, they allow me, then I start freely training. And just now, I’m guaranteed in the Olympics. The only championship I became, you know, I achieved everything in athletics. So, but you know, really now, it’s my goal was, you know, to break Ma…”

“Joshua Cheptegei, another professional runner, speaks in the video.

I started running when I was in primary school. I was in P5, and I was 11 years old. I was running barefooted, and I was running to school. And then, I started running for my school, and then I started running for my district. And then, I started running for my country.

So, it’s been a journey, and I’m happy that I’m still running. I’m still enjoying it. I’m still passionate about it. And I’m still looking forward to achieving more in the sport.”
